What I love about the Martini is that it's only two ingredients. I've experimented with different ratios and found 3:1 to be my favorite.
3 oz Gin
1 oz Dry Vermouth
Stirred, never shaken! Garnish with however many olives you like. I like four olives. Some prefer to add a dash of orange bitters and garnish with an orange peel. I like to stick with no bitters and strictly olives.
My favorite gin for Martinis is Plymouth. I like it because it's less juniper forward and a bit softer than most gins. Beefeater London Dry is a very close second. Both are made in England in some of the oldest distilleries in the world.
If you must buy American, try Aviation. Distilled in Oregon, it's made its way to the top of lists of favorites among critics. It gained in popularity after Ryan Reynolds bought it. I'm all for buying American. When it comes to spirits, however, quality always wins.
Hendrick's Gin (original) is made in Scotland and is an interesting gin. Hendrick's Martinis are best garnished with a slice of cucumber. It's a nice change of pace from time to time.
